DAITH PIERCING (PRONOUNCED LIKE DOTH)

If you have ever experienced a migraine you know that moment of contemplation when you think maybe taking an ice pick to your head would somehow relieve the symptoms. For me it's vision disturbances, intense pain in my head, numbness of my hands, lips or tongue (that's always a fun one) and nausea.

Usually when a migraine springs up on me, I go into my room and pretend to be dead for a few hours or until I start feeling somewhat human again. It is a special type of hell that I wouldn't wish upon anyone.

I had gotten to a point where I was so desperate for relief I decided to trust the internet's advice (as well as a woman at a gas station who raved about her's to me) and get a daith piercing; which supposedly contains the magical power of relieving migraines.

Daith piercing

[Side note, if you ever decide to get a daith piercing, please know that it is pronounced like goth but with a "D." I felt like a real idiot when I went in and asked for a daith piercing (pronounced like faith) only to be corrected by this rough-around-the edges 60-year-old woman working the front desk of the tattoo/piercing shop.]

I have had my daith piercing for just over 4 months and I have to say there are definitely some noticeable benefits. My migraines are triggered by a few different factors; one being my period. Since I have only had the piercing for 4 months, I subsequently could have only experienced migraine relief for 4 menstrual cycles. But so far so good there. No migraines, hallelujah!

The other type of migraine I experience is caused by the weather. Spring and early summer are real killers for me and unfortunately I have had two migraines back to back. However, the intensity and duration of them seems to be a bit more manageable now that I have the daith piercing. Also, two migraines in the span of 4 months is far more manageable than what I had been experiencing prior to the daith.

The only downfall has been the upkeep. Since I am extremely low maintenance (literally anything besides brushing my teeth is a chore) doing salt soaks and keeping the piercing itself clean has been a bit of a task. But, honestly it isn't that bad. All in all, I'd say having a needle shoved through my cartilage and not being able to lay on my left side has been well worth the daith.

Now, is it possible that this is all a placebo? Yes.

Is it possible that I haven't had the piercing long enough to truly see its effects? Definitely yes.

Is it possible that I feel cooler and more bad ass with the daith piercing? Hell yes.
